Happy New Year

I don't have any good fireworks images or I would post one of them tonight. I do have a good image of a screech owl though so I am posting him instead. This little guy was posing so nice I just had to get a shot of him. His eyes are huge, I bet he has great night vision. I shot this image at Hocking Hills State Park during a Shoot the Hills competition, in 2007. I will be going again in 2009 but it is still about 4 months away. I can't wait.

Shadow Dancing

I shot this image at Starfield concert about 2 months ago. A good friend of mine works with the people who manage this band and a few other bands. I was impressed with the music it was better than I thought it would be. I took a bunch of pictures that night but this particular image is one of my favorite images. Most of the images I took show the band and the light show, this image is more artistic so it appeals more to me for that reason. I have titled it Shadow Dancing as it looks like a bunch of shadows dancing and praising God. Well I hope you enjoy this image as much as I do.

Panoramic 3

I showed you the other 2 panoramic images that I have done so I might as well show you the last one that I have done. This is the one that I did while I was a student at OIP&T. It is also my favorite of the 3 panoramic images that I have made. This one is made of 12-13 images stitched together. I'll finish this post later, I am going to go watch 3:10 to Yuma with my wife. I'm back, the movie was pretty good, I didn't really like the ending but it was still a good movie. So, I was going to tell you more about this image but I am tired so I am not going to say much. This image was shot with a Canon Digital Rebel, this building was my favorite place to shoot. I say was, as the building is no longer standing. About 70% of the building was lost in a fire and the rest was demolished shortly after the fire. The last images I took of this building were of the fire and demo of the remaining part of the barn. It was a sad day. Well I hope you have enjoyed my panoramic images. I am going to try and do another one soon, I promise, as soon as I get it done, I will make a blog post about it.

Panoramic 2

I decided that I would show you the biggest panoramic I have ever done. The panoramic from yesterdays post is a 4 x 10 and the panoramic in this post is a 4 x 20. That is the difference between one made of 6 images versus 16 images. I did this one for a friend who attends this church. This is by far the hardest stitch I have ever done and if you know what to look for you can see some small irregularities. I am still very pleased with the result. I am still trying to think of a good subject for my next panoramic.

Panoramic 1

I have not done a lot of panoramic images but it is quite interesting and can be fun. This is my 3rd attempt at one and I was quite pleased with the results. This particular image is actually 5 different frames stitched together. My first attempt at a panoramic was 13 frames, I did this as a school project and it actually got me an A. It was by far the best subject I have made a panoramic image of. My 2nd attempt was 15-16 frames and it was the hardest I've ever tried. When I did the 13 frame stitch at school I had a lot of help, but when I tried the next one 2 years later I was all by myself and I was never happy with it. I got some new stitching software a while ago and I tried the 16 frames again and I had good success, needless to say I was pleased. The image that I have shown in this post is the smallest stitch I have made but it isn't easy with any stitch. Half of the work is done in camera and the other half is done in computer. If you make a mistake at either end the results are not good. If you mess up in camera you will likely not achieve success at all. I have wanted to do another panoramic image but I am not sure what I want to shoot, I guess I need to think about it a bit and come up with a good subject. Then I need to make myself go out and do it.

Fort Rapids

Every summer my nephew comes from Florida to visit for a couple of weeks. While he is here my mom likes to do something special that the cousins (my nephew and my 4 children) can do together. This year she decided to take us all to Fort Rapids in Columbus, Ohio. Fort Rapids is an indoor water park that is attached to a hotel. You may have heard of The Great Wolf or The Great Bear Lodges, Fort Rapids is pretty much the same thing. If you have not heard of either you should check them out online. I have been to both and they are pretty much the same thing. If you pay for 1 night you get to spend 2 days in the water park, which if you ask me is plenty of time. I am sure the kids would say it isn't enough time, mine would spend a week there if I let them. Let me tell you a little bit about the water park, this first image is of my oldest and youngest going into a giant funnel.

After you climb all the way to the top of the water parks highest point you get on this double tube and go down a water slide that dumps you into this giant funnel. You then spin around the inside of the funnel until you get to the bottom of the funnel and you are spit out onto another slide that sends you into the lazy river. This 2nd image is of them as they come out of the funnel.

It is really a lot of fun. I took these next images from the top of the funnel, the first image is of the main body of the water park. In the center of the water park is this giant fort that you climb around in and play in the water.

There are slides, water guns, hoses, buckets and all kind of things to play with or on. At the very top of the fort is a giant bucket that fills up with water and every few minutes dumps itself onto the fort and everyone who is to close to the fort. The 2nd image shows you what it looks like when the water is dumped.

There is a bell that rings when it is about to dump, so that you can run (I mean walk as running is against the rules). I don't mean run away either, this is a highlight to the park, everyone hears the bell and runs to the spot where the water gets dumped. There is something fun about standing in a spot that you know is about to be drenched with water and allow yourself to get sloshed. This last image shows people being sloshed.

You have got to try it, getting sloshed (as in drenched not drunk) isn't my favorite part of the water park but I do from time to time partake of it. I enjoy the fort for other reasons, if you know what you are doing you can modify the water hoses, buckets and guns to allow you to get unsuspecting people wet. I enjoy this more than anything else. It is so much fun to hide in the fort and spray people who think they are far enough away to stay dry. If you are lucky enough to get a good hose you can even follow the person as the try to get away and keep spraying them, it is a lot of fun. I spend several hours in the fort spraying unsuspecting people, it never gets boring. I hope you enjoy the story and if you get a chance you should stay at one of these parks.

For the Youngs, Merry Christmas!

Let me explain the title of this blog, (for everyone but the Youngs). You see I took these photos at my church during our annual Christmas program. As a result, I had several people ask me for copies of the images, the Youngs were one of them. As usual I was very busy and it took me a few days to get the photos converted from RAW images to JPEG images. Unfortunately, the Youngs had to leave town shortly after the program and I didn't have the images converted yet, hence the title of this blog. I have posted these images specifically for the Youngs, though I do hope that everyone who sees this blog will enjoy seeing the children, they truly sang their hearts out for all who attended.

Merry Christmas to all,

Merry Christmas!!!

I hope you are having a wonderful Christmas this year. I am sitting at my parents house as my kids argue over who gets to play the wii. My parents got the kids a wii system last year and this year she got my wife a wii fit. The kids also received some wii games and everyone wants to play the wii at the same time. My wife hasn't had a chance to play yet. We typically have lunch at my parents but this year we decided to have breakfast instead. It was great, we had so much food I didn't think we would ever get it all cooked. We did though and I ate my share without any trouble. We had Bacon, Sausage, Sausage gravy & Biscuits, Home Fries, Eggs, French Toast and if we had more I don't remember what it was. Then for desert we had homemade cookies and other baked goodies. It was during lunch that I had an opportunity to remind our family why it is that we truly have Christmas. It is so easy to get caught up in the holiday happenings that we can easily overlook the true reason for Christmas. While I was in bed last night unable to fall asleep I started thinking about Christmas and compared it to other major holidays. Maybe I am incorrect and if I am please let me know, but I could only think of 1 other holiday that is celebrated worldwide (for the most part). Christmas and Halloween, Christmas was a holiday that when it was started was centered on Christ (or God) and Halloween centers on Satan (or evil). I personally do not think this is a coincidence, but I will not try and explain to you what it means (mostly because I don't know what it means). Well anyway, I reminded my family that we need to not forget about the fact that we are remembering the birth of our Lord and Savior at Christmas time. I reminded them that it isn't wrong to give and receive gifts at this time of year and that it is o.k. to participate in the holiday festivities. I just wanted them to remember that there is more to Christmas than the worlds definition of Christmas.

Merry Christmas for now, I'll write more later and post some images from today's mayhem.

Merry Christmas Eve

Well it's Christmas Eve, are finished with your shopping yet? I just finished up today at about noon. My wife is hurriedly wrapping the last of the gifts while I write this blog. I am posting this early because I am leaving here in about 20 minutes and I am not sure I will be home before midnight. I am in a hurry but I wanted to get something posted before I left. I will write more when I get home later tonight. In the meantime Merry Christmas Eve!

I made it home before midnight so I thought I would post a couple of images from our families Christmas party. We had Turkey and mashed potatoes (and a lot of other good things too) for dinner that was very good.

Then we played wii and opened presents. Then we played wii and had dessert, it was yummy. I took this image that I have titled Jingle Bells for my stock photography site.

It is 11:35 p.m. just under 30 minutes until it is Christmas day. I will write another post tomorrow. I hope you are having a good Christmas.

Morning Hike

This image was shot at Hocking Hills State Park in Hocking County, Ohio. My family was camping in the park and I got up early one morning for a short hike before breakfast. I love to hike in this park as the trees are just beautiful. This was a typical day in the park so it is easy to find a scene like I have in this image. The morning mist lifting off the ground with the sun filtering through give the woods a surreal feeling. It is makes me feel more alive when I am in the woods on a day like this. This image was shot with a Canon Digital Rebel with Canon 28-135mm IS lens. Focal length 100mm, SS 1/10th @ F/5.6. Tripod mounted. I think this is the first time I have posted any of the image details but I think I'll start doing it more often.

Check out my "Image of the Month" category!

I have added a new category list on the blog. I took the idea from a friends blog. I now have a category called "Image of the Month" where you can see my favorite image for each month. If you choose a month from the list you will be directed to the blog from that month which has my favorite image in it. So check it out and let me know what you think, I only have 2 months in the list so far so be patient. This blog will always be a work in progress so continue to check it out. As I find new and interesting things to add to the blog I will write a post letting you know about them.

You didn't think I would let you off that easy, did you? I have to give you something to look at that I think is either cool, beautiful, amazing, intriguing, mesmerizing or well you get the idea. This is a photographers blog so I am obligated by the "Photographers Code of Conduct". I believe if you had a copy of the code, which you don't as it is top secret, you would find it in article 36.8, subset C-II, fpn (fine print note) d. I am pretty sure that is the article for the code my book isn't handy and I am going by memory. All professionally trained photographers are required to memorize the code but few of us remember it all. Enough of that lets get to the subject at hand. The image above is one of my favorite. This image was shot in my dinning room, the flower was a part of an arrangement that we had received for something, I can't remember what. I was just messing around and I put the vase on the floor and turned out the lights and started painting with light. This is one of the results from that session of messing around. I think I just broke another code, a photographer is never to admit that he/she was just messing around when they made a great image. OOPS I hope no other photographers read my blog. If the wrong photographer sees this I could be removed from the photographers guild. This image was shot with a Canon 10d and a 28-135mm IS lens. Focal length 135mm, ISO 1600, SS 1/40th F/5.6 using painting with light technique.

Dilapidated Revisited

I went back to the same old building where I took the image from yesterdays blog. My whole blog was about missed opportunities, so I thought I should try and get back into the building before it was gone or renovated. As soon as I got out of my vehicle I noticed that the windows had all been boarded up with plywood. Worse than that, I also noticed a bunch of construction vehicles parked around one end of the building. I had missed yet another opportunity, at least I had been in the building once and was able to get some very good images. I was hoping to get some more but I waited to long to go back. I really wanted to shoot in an abandoned building but I couldn't think of where any were that were close by. I decide to go to a nearby covered bridge and shoot it, while in route to the bridge I remembered an old factory that wasn't to far away. I have wanted to shoot it for a long time. Long story short I decided that I need to go and take some photographs of the factory before it was to late. Part of the factory burned a couple of years ago and another one of the buildings is decayed to the point that it is falling down. I knew that if I didn't get in there soon it would be to late. I had a short amount of time but I was able to get a some shots. It was very cold today, so the fact that I didn't have a lot of time didn't bother me to much. When I left the house it was -15 degrees with the wind chill. I dressed quite warm and I had fun. I haven't had a chance to download the images yet but as soon as I do I will upload something to share with you.

This image is the first image I took today, as you can see this building is in very bad shape. There is no way to save this building when the ceiling caved in it pushed the wall to the left side of the image over. The entire left side of the building has collapsed. I was nervous that the roof could collapse at any moment while we were in the building. It was very windy today and much of the wood is rotten, but as you can see from the image and the fact that I am writing this blog I survived. Believe it or not I only took about 8 or 9 images inside this building and the rest of the time I was shooting macro shots of water and ice on the ground and plants outside of the buildings. I was only in the property for about 30 minutes and have decided that I will return once it is warmer. There are many buildings and not all in as bad a condition as this one. If I get another opportunity to shoot at this property I will be sure to post some images for you to view and tell you about my experience.

Dilapidated

I love old abandoned buildings, they are my favorite place to shoot. I know I say that about a lot of different things or places, but I really mean it about old buildings. I love to go into a building that hasn't been occupied in years and see what was left behind. It is like a history lesson in a way. I guess it could be considered rudimentary archeology, well not quite but it is the closet I'll ever come to archeology in my lifetime. This all seems so dejavu to me, I think if you look in my archives you will probably find another post where I talked about abandoned or dilapidated buildings. Yesterday was my 50th post so I can't remember exactly what I have and have not written about in the past posts. The image that I am showing you in this post is one that I have on my stock photography website. It happens to be the one image that has received the most comments of all of my stock images, so I thought I would share it with my loyal readers.

This image was taken in a building not too far from where I live, no it isn't one from the campus where I live. This building is a part of a local University not far from where I live. I noticed it many years ago and I had often wondered what they were going to do with it. I knew that I would eventually get into the building and have a look. One day a few years later I drove by the building again, I had forgotten about it. I was surprised to see that it was still sitting empty, I knew that I needed to get in and shoot it before they demolished it. I have missed many opportunities to shoot in old buildings by procrastinating and when I decided to finally do it, the buildings were gone or being renovated. For example, the town that I grew up in had an orphanage that sat on about 250 acres of land. On the edge of their property sat an old water tank, it was very cool and would have made a great photographic subject. I had wanted to photograph it for years but I never felt like there was any hurry, I mean where was it going to go? It was always there and I thought it would always be there, I was wrong. In 2004 I decided it was time for me to go and shoot the water tank, when I got there it was gone. The orphanage had been closed for a number of years and the property had been sold. The new property owners tore the water tank down to make way for a retirement village. That is just one of too many missed opportunities that I could tell you about. I have many success stories that I can share as well, but a missed opportunity like that can never be had again. Well I need to get this post finished I still have to get a message to my good friend Todd Kuhns in South Carolina. Hey Todd there's your link.

Covered Bridges

When I was a student at OIP&T (Ohio Institute of Photography & Technology), one of my assignments was to choose a photographer and copy their style. This was a black and white film class so we were to choose from photographers of the past. These projects were some of my favorite, I love to learn about the photographers upon whose shoulders the foundation of photography as I know it is laid. One of the more famous and obvious choices is Ansel Adams, my initial decision was to choose him. I really love Ansel's work, but the more I thought about it the more I realized that Ansel was to obvious a choice. I ended up choosing Edward Weston, though not as famous he and Ansel were close friends. They were both great photographers though Ansel is more widely known today. In class, our teacher would show slide shows of different photographers work, so that we could see their styles and decide who we wanted to emulate. I almost chose Elliott Erwitt, his work is very comical and whimsical in nature. When we came to Edward Weston he showed us a series of Weston's tastefully done nudes, which I thought were very good images but not something that I wanted to try and do myself. After the nudes he showed us a series that Weston had done on American Barns. This series really struck me as interesting, I had been wanting to do some photos of the covered bridges around Greene County and this would fall right in line with the project. The only negative was that it was winter and the scenery in Ohio during the winter months is not really very photogenic. Not to mention that it is cold out and I wanted to shoot from in the rivers to get the best view. Did I let this stop me? Of course not, what self respecting photographer would let cold weather and cold water stop him from getting his shot? O.K. don't answer that question, I was being rhetorical. In Greene County there are 6 covered bridges and I shot them all. The project turned out pretty good but I can't share the images with you today. They are all film and I haven't taken the time to scan them and make them digital yet. I do have a shot of one of the bridges that I will upload, it was taken in the summer so the grass and trees are green. The images I used for my class project show bare trees and gray skies. One of these days I'll scan them and upload them for you to see. I may write tomorrow about another photographer of the past that I learned about in my history of photography class. She was before Ansel and Weston and she photographed the wild west state of Montana, or maybe I'll tell you more about Weston. Who knows, tomorrow I may change the topic to something totally different, that is why I like this blog, I can talk about whatever I want.

Bald Eagle

I love shooting wildlife, unfortunately there isn't a lot of wildlife around me so I have to go to the zoo to see real wildlife. I shot this Bald Eagle at the Cincinnati Zoo, I was so excited that he just sat there and didn't fly away or move or something. My dream would be to shoot an image like this of a Bald Eagle living in the wild not in a zoo. I will be happy to shoot the ones in captivity in the meantime. I saw my first Bald Eagle in the wild about a year ago. My family and I were camping in Delaware State Park for a weekend in October 2007. Our reservations for the campsite were up on Sunday but we found out that on Sunday they were having a canoe trip with the naturalist on the lake. I couldn't resist the opportunity and my two oldest daughters wanted to go as well. The three of us spent about 1 hour floating around the lake looking at the various items the naturalist pointed out to us. We had spent most of our time in a cove and the naturalist decided close to the end of our time to head out onto the main body of the lake. We did but we stayed close to the shore as it was quite windy on the water. As we came around a bend the naturalist pointed and said look a Bald Eagle. It was the first time I had ever seen one that was truly wild and free. It was beautiful as it glided over the lake. I only regret that I had decided not to bring my camera for fear of being dumped in the water. Well I hope to see some this summer as I know of several State Parks where Bald Eagles are supposed to live in. Hopefully the next time I write about Bald Eagles I will be able to post a image of one that I shot in the wild.

Walleye fishing on Lake Erie

These photos are from a fishing trip that I went on with the guys from work. We charted a fishing boat on Lake Erie that took us out walleye fishing, it was great fun. I never caught a lot of fish but I took my camera along and caught a bunch of great images. The two images that I am posting show the guys having a good time. We never caught our limit but we did quite well. The guide who is on the lake every day caught more than any of us. I guess it's like anything else, practice makes perfect. What a life sitting on a boat on the lake everyday with a fishing pole in your hand reeling in a fish. As you can see in the photos we are on the move so no one has a line in the water. We are on our way to a location that the guide says the fish are really biting. If you have never been walleye fishing on Lake Erie you should try it sometime, it is a lot of fun and you can get a tan at the same time. Well this all I have time for tonight, hopefully I'll have more time on the weekend and maybe I'll have a more interesting subject as well.

Ohio State Parks

A while back I had a post titled Shoot the Hills, it was during this post that I mentioned the Ohio State Parks. I also mentioned then that my family and I love to go camping. We do most of our camping in an Ohio State Park, though we sometimes camp in private campgrounds. The Ohio State Park system is made up of 73 State Parks, most offer camping of some sort. We (my wife) like the more developed campgrounds with electricity, flushing toilets and showers. I love to photograph nature and the parks are in some of the most scenic parts of Ohio. They are nothing compared to Yellowstone or the Grand Canyon, but I enjoy them none the less. I have visited 19 of the parks and have camped in 8 of them. My 2 favorite parks are Hocking Hills State Park and Shawnee State Park. I like Hocking Hills as it is the most scenic and has the best hiking trails and I like Shawnee as it is also a very beautiful park and offers an abundance of wildlife opportunities. Shawnee's nature center is leaps and bounds above any of the other parks nature centers, I enjoy visiting it almost as much as my girls do. The image above was shot just outside Shawnee's nature center on the backside of the spillway of the lake. I love this image as it reminds me of fun times and the beautiful blue summer skies of Ohio. Mohican State Park is my wife's favorite park to camp in. My favorite part of Mohican is the river that runs through the campground. It is very shallow and runs quite slow so it is perfect for tubing. I love to sit in a tube and drift down the river, I could do it all day long. My family would rather swim in a boring old swimming pool, why would you want to swim in a pool when you can float down a river and see the beauty of God's creation as you float past it? I hope you enjoy learning a bit about the Ohio State Park system, if you would like to learn more you can visit their website at http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/Default.aspx?alias=www.dnr.state.oh.us/parks.

Happy Anniversary

Wow, this blog is 1 year old today. When I started this blog my plans were to have a daily blog, one where I would post a new image and talk about the image every day. Well for a long time, most of the year actually, I didn't even post once a week. It wasn't until about a month ago that I decided to start putting more time into my blog and I have since been making a new post daily. I must admit it is harder than it sounds. I have only been doing the daily thing for about a month now and I have had many days where I didn't feel like taking the time to do a post, I have been making myself and I am going to continue to for as long as I can. It truly takes a serious commitment to make yourself take the time every day to write something new. I hope those of you who have found my blog enjoy and I hope you will visit it often.

No, I didn't have Christmas cupcakes for my blog anniversary but I wanted a picture of a cake and this is the first image I thought of. I love cake, especially cupcakes. These particular cupcakes were made for the Christmas concert at my church. I saw them sitting on the table and I just had to get a shot of them. The one to the left of the image with the red and green sprinkles is the one that I ate, it was delicious. I wanted to have a great subject to talk about for the 100th anniversary of my blog but I just realized Saturday that today was the anniversary date. So I didn't have much time to think about a grand topic. So my 1 year anniversary is just going to be a boring post saying Happy Anniversary to myself.

Miracle on Main Street

Wow only 10 more days until Christmas, have you finished your shopping? I know that I haven't finished mine yet, but I don't usually get finished until Dec. 23rd or 24th. I am used to shopping up until the last minute. It doesn't seem to matter how early I start I never seem to get finished until the last minute.

Enough about that I have another subject to talk about tonight, "Miracle on Main Street" no, I wasn't on Main St. while a miracle happened at least not one that I am aware of. I do however believe that God allows miracles to happen regularly. The Miracle on Main Street that I am referring to is a Christmas Program that I saw tonight at my church. The children's church department put on a play for the church tonight and it was very good.

There were a few adults in the production but for the most part it was just children. I took photos of the program and my daughter brought her point and shoot and took some video as well. I am going to upload some of my images and hopefully some of the video from my daughters camera. The story was about a group of kids who put on a Christmas Pageant each year but the Mayor was up for a re-election and he didn't want any negative publicity so he called the pageant off 1 day before it was supposed to happen. The kids were upset after all their work and they came up with the idea of going Christmas Carolling to all the houses on Main Street and asked the people to contact the Mayor and request he reconsider canceling the pageant.

At each house they went to they were surprised to find that many people view Christmas from different beliefs and perspectives. In the end they had enough support from the community that the Mayor relented and let the pageant go on.

After the pageant he was so moved by the reactions of the community that he actually attended the pageant and was reminded of just what the true meaning of Christmas is, as were all of us in the audience tonight. Let us not forget why the word Christ is in Christmas.

Do you remember when?

Do you remember the last time gas was this cheap? If you do then you've probably used a phone like the one in the picture bellow. This phone was the type that was used around the time that gas was this cheap.

I know that gas isn't this cheap anymore but it is thankfully much cheaper now than it was about a month ago. I am thankful that God has decided to give us a break from the high prices that we had been paying. I for one am happy, I had a very hard time keeping gas in my car when it got up to $4.00 per gallon. All I can say is thank you Lord for small blessings.

Where is your focus?

I am having trouble with my left eye, I can't keep it open. I wanted to get this image posted and give my eye a rest. I will get on in a couple of hours and talk about it.
Photoman
If you noticed the title of this blog, it has nothing to do with my eye trouble, hopefully what I am about to say will be a good explanation. As a photographer, focus is important to all of my images. Whether I have them in or out of focus, whether I have my focus on a certain point in a image or the entire image is the focus. Focus determines whether a image is good or bad, if I can't relay to you the viewer where my focus is in a image it will not make sense. I sell stock photography and on more than one occasion I have submitted images to the stock agency only to have them rejected for lack of a clear focal point. In these instances I failed as a photographer to effectively tell the story of my image. The image above is a good example of a poorly focused image, it is not sharp I should have used a tripod while taking this photo but once again I neglected to bring it along with me. I didn't choose the image for this reason, I chose it because of what happened tonight. My two youngest daughters had their Christmas concert tonight and I went and watched my little angels sing. I chose this image as it represents something that we see all the time during the Christmas season. It is almost just a part of the festivities and the fact that it is actually a reminder of the birth of Christ is often forgotten. We all get so busy this time of year just trying to get through the holiday that we often lose our focus. I am as guilty as anyone. This year I had hoped would be different, Kelly and I had made some very big decisions for our future based on what we believe God is asking us to do, I am still so excited I can't wait. I talked about our big decision in a post last month titled California or Bust you can read it if you want to know more about it. I thought it would be so easy to keep my focus on God but its when we are focused on God that Satan attacks the hardest. Thursday he started attacking us and he hasn't stopped. I have been so preoccupied with trying to fight back that I took my focus off of the goal and focused on the problem. The speaker at the concert tonight spoke on Job, how when God allowed trouble into Job's life, Job took his focus off of God and focused on his problems. I realized tonight that I had lost my focus, when I should be focusing on God and what He has planned for me I was focusing on what Satan is doing to me. I need to shift my perspective and stop focusing on the problems of life and focus on God and the fact that He loves me and He knows what is best for me. If these problems that He is allowing in my life are what He thinks is best for me then I need to be thankful for them and praise Him for them. So I am asking you tonight, Where is your Focus?

Visions of Paradise

I recently entered a photography competition. The theme for the contest was Visions of Paradise. The rules for the contest are pretty simple, everyone involved is supposed to photograph things that to them represents a Vision of Paradise. You don't win money but if your image is picked it may get published in a book. The other big rule is that when you enter a photo you have to write why you feel this image is a vision of paradise to you. There are some other minor rules that would just make this blog post boring so I am going to leave them out. The following images are the ones that I have submitted to date. I will write what I wrote about the images below each image. I may not remember what I wrote word for word but you will get the idea. If you are reading this please respond to this blog and let me know what you think of the images.

For each image I wrote something like this.
I shot this image while hiking early one morning in my favorite part of Ohio. As the sun came up I noticed that the sun was filtering through the leaves and highlighting the fog giving the woods a surreal look. That is why this image is to me a Vision of Paradise.

I shot this image while traveling in California. I came across this pier just as the sun was setting. The sun setting over the horizon, the blue ocean waters and the colorful sky are what makes this image a Vision of Paradise to me.

I shot this image while traveling in California. My children were having fun playing in the ocean surf. Any place that allows children to have carefree fun is to me a true Vision of Paradise.

I took this image while traveling in Jamaica. The palm trees in the foreground and the rays of light from the setting sun lighting the sky to me is a Vision of Paradise.

I took this image while traveling in Jamaica. This image of the sun setting over the mountains of Jamaica giving the sky a beautiful orange glow with a sailboat gracefully sailing by in the blue ocean water is to me a Vision of Paradise.
Don't forget, let me know what you think of these images.

I'm Tired

Well I am going to make tonight's blog short as I am tired. I usually do a blog post each day and then I take a few minutes to send a good friend of mine a message. Yesterday I was having trouble with my Internet connection and was able to get my blog done but I was not able to get a message to my friend. I don't want to let him down again tonight, so I am going to make this short and then send a quick message to my buddy in South Carolina. I am kinda peeved at him right now though, but I have to be an adult about this and overlook his childish way of rubbing in my face the fact that he now lives in warm South Carolina while I am still stuck here in cold Ohio. Just kidding Todd, if you read this I am truly jealous but I am also happy for you. I will be sure to rub it in when I move to California or Australia.

O.K. to the blog post, let's see a subject for tonight... hold on a sec let me see what picture I want to post and write about, be right back..........

O.K. this is the image I chose to post tonight. I shot this image one night after a rain. As I was coming in the entrance to the campus where we live I couldn't help but notice the thick layer of fog hanging around and I just had to get out and shoot. We live on about 300 acres and there are lots of interesting things to shoot, one of the interesting areas is the old cemetery. It is kind of creepy on a clear night but on a misty or foggy night it is even better. This image was the only good one I ended up with as I didn't think to grab my tripod until I was quite a ways from my house. I just decided to crank up the iso and let the images be noisy. Unfortunately, I still needed a tripod in the cemetery so I only got one decent image out of the lot that I took. I thought I would share it tonight.

Bon Voyage! Part 4

This is the last of a 4 part story, you may want to read parts 1 - 3 before reading this blog post. This series of blog posts chronicles the adventures that my daughter Taylor and I encountered during our trip to France and England. Part 3 ends as we are leaving Grenoble, France which is in the French Alps and we take a train to Lyon, France the second largest city in France. After this train ride we have only 1 train ride left and this last ride will take us to the airport. The ride to Lyon was pretty uneventful the adventure will begin when we arrive at Lyon. We are not sure where we will be staying when we get there, we are to be split up among church families for our last 3 nights in France. I was to stay in a home with 2 other team members, my daughter had been stuck with me the entire trip so she was allowed to stay in a different home than where I stayed. Myself and the other 2 members of our team stayed with David & Irene Bohn, they are a very nice young couple who made us feel very welcome in their home. Our first night we arrived at just about dinner time, the Bohns were very hospitable even when we arrived at a inhospitable time. They made us feel right at home and treated us to the best of anything that they had. Our first meal there we had green pumpkin soup, which reminded me very much of pea soup. It was really pretty good, I wasn't sure if I would like it but I had 2 helpings. Irene spoke a little English but David spoke hardly any, I spoke no French but the other 2 of my team spoke some French. So between the 5 of us we were able to carry on a decent conversation. It turns out that David is a Mime, we had been hoping to see a mime while we were in Paris but it was the wrong time of year for them. David agreed to do some Miming for us and he was very good. It was quite a good evening and I was happy to be staying in their home. The next day we were to hand out in Lyon and see some of the city before heading to the church that night to hang out with the youth group. Lyon was a very interesting city, Taylor and I stayed together for the most part as we were trying to finish up some souvenir shopping for family members. As we were basically out of money by this time we pretty much walked around and window shopped. Taylor was able to buy a few inexpensive things for her sisters and we managed enough money to eat but we were truly spending the last of our money. From some of the mishaps we had encountered on our trip much of our spending money was used in ways that we had not planned, when my luggage was lost I had to buy new clothes and when we got stuck in Paris without the team I had to buy our tickets to get us to Grenoble as well as our food that was to be taken care of by the team. So most of our spending money was gone early into the trip. We did make do however and managed to enjoy ourselves just the same. Later that Evening when we went to the church we were greeted at the door by a very energetic young lady named Anne-Lise. She was so excited to meet Americans she could hardly stand it. She turned out to be the life of the party that evening and her very friendly and fun personality won over the entire team within a few minutes. It was that night that I learned of her desire to come to the US, she wanted to come here to learn to speak English. I instantly felt that I should invite this girl to come stay with us in America. The more I thought about it the more I knew it was the right thing to do. I decided to ask my wife about it, she wasn't against the idea so I took this to mean yes and I invited Anne-Lise to come to our home and stay for a time. She was so excited that I thought she was going to pass out. Later the next day I was talking with a lady in her church and she told me that Anne-Lise had been praying for someone to invite her to the US for 3 years. I didn't know this until that moment, it was then that I knew that what I did was of the Lord and not of myself. Back to the story, that night our team was able to teach the French teens how to do the Chicken Dance and the Electric Slide. It was quite fun to watch and the kids all had a great time, after the dancing we had French Pizza and more fellowship time. It was a fun way to end our stay in France. After the fun with the youth group we each broke up into our smaller groups and went back to the individual homes where we were staying. We each had to make our way through the metro system to the different homes. The home of the Bohn's where I was staying just happened to be located next to the Basketball Arena for the Lyon Pro Basketball team. When we arrived back at apartment building we had to go past the Arena, a game just happened to be going on and the doors were wide open so we went in to check it out. We saw the last few minutes of the game as it was just ending. I took some photos of the teams congratulating each other. We missed any play action as we were in line trying to buy a hot dog. It was still a fun thing to do, we were able to tell the rest of the team how we snuck into a basketball game. When we arrived at the Bohn's it was late so we pretty much went to bed as we had to get up early the next day for church. The next morning we went to church and after the service we hung out in Lyon and did a bit more sight seeing. After that we spent one more night with the families and the next morning we got up early and our host families made sure that we all made it to the train station on time. Once we were all at the station we boarded the train and went to the Airport in Paris. This was again an uneventful train ride and we arrived shortly at the airport. We made our way to our terminal and got on our plane and flew back to the US. It was a long and short 3 weeks that I look back on with good memories. I wouldn't trade any of for anything. This brings us to the title of the past 4 blogs, "Bon Voyage". Last Wednesday we said Bon Voyage to Anne-Lise. She came to the US on Sept. 5, 2008 and stayed with us for 3 months. It was quite lively around the house for those 3 months, it was fun and at times frustrating trying to communicate with her. When she arrived her English was not good but when she left she was speaking English quite well. It was her dream to come to America and I am honored that God would choose my family to fulfill her dream. It is humbling to think that you were a part of fulfilling someones dream. She has been gone now for almost a week and the house is quieter for sure. I do miss her but at the same time it is nice to be back to our normal routine for a while. Well I hope you have enjoyed hearing about the adventure that Taylor and I had the privilege of sharing while in Europe.
